:: About Us

Mentally ill are the worst sufferers and most neglected among the ailing folks. Besides, they are very much vulnerable from the viewpoint of Human Rights Violation. That is why SEVAC an NGO (Sane and Enthusiast Volunteers' Association of Calcutta) has been working in India for the cause of these suffering souls since its inception in the year 1988.

In course of continuing the work in the area of mental health SEVAC team noticed an obvious correlation between mental illness and Human Rights Violations. As for instance :

  • as per a modest assessment, at least 1% population of the country has been suffering from major psychiatric illnesses

  • 10% to 15% of the total population have been suffering from varied mental health problems

  • only 10% of the people, who need psychiatric care and treatment, have got any access to the mental health care delivery system

  • mental illnesses often cause disability and sideline the victims from the mainstream of social life

  • human dignity is almost absent in the life of the mentally ill

  • a large number of people still languish in jails and custodial institutions in a sub human condition not only in our country but also across the world only for having mental illness

STILL WE HAVE BEEN IGNORING THE URGENCY AND NECESSITY TO BRING SUCCOUR TO THE MENTAL PATIENTS.

Just a few evidences

Acute mental patients are often restrained by their family members in this manner

This mental patient was brutally beaten up by the public

A girl came with chain to SEVAC Home for admission

Thus the mentally ill are dumped in custodial institutions
We do promise
To work with dedication for the cause of the mental patients and other vulnerable groups, giving emphasis on their human rights promotion

We do believe
SEVAC would emerge as a Centre of excellence in the field of Mental Health & Human Rights if adequate resource is available

We try to address the problems of the mental patients with a holistic approach
